Robot Wars Discussion Forum: General: Bizarre but fun

Here's an amusing little idea to help tide you over while the boards are so quiet...

If you could compare a robot to a football team, who would it be and why?

i.e.

Chaos 2 - Man Utd - Everybody knows that it's good, but never want it to win in favour of someone else winning the competition for a change

Hypnodisc - Arsenal - Always a strong contender, but never quite seems to manage to go all the way...

I must thank everyone for a great weekends entertainment.Roy and Eddy deserve a big thankyou also Tom Moye who helped with the repairs in the work shop.
The weekend belongs to Tornado who killed or maimed most of the robots. Well done lads.
Another thanks to every one who helped keep Humphrey going and being one of the 11 last running bots on Sunday evening.
It was Humphries last outing and is now retired.

I went to the saturday afternoon session and I thouroughly enjoyed myself. Kludge and I spent 5 hours in total appreciating the other robots and watching the fights.

I think Tornado looks great with the new addition to the front and compared to the others that were there you could very easily notice the difference in speed and acceleration. Very nice peice of kit (Or nasty, depending on how you look at it.) As I viewer for the next series it was also great to see new ones like The Executioner and Anthrax looking so good and practically ready to go. The shell for executioner looked amazing!!

I regret not introducing myself more loudly as I went around. I actually looked over at Mike with Dantomkia but for some reason didn't go over. Aar well, next time.... BTW Dantomkia was fantastic in the fights I saw although i would agree with Alan about the BIG HAMMER!!:)

Anyway - GREAT FUN!! Thanks to all:O

Another cracking weekend by Eddy, Roy and colleagues. It was hard going for them and also the teams strong enough to keep on winning ('coz the damn things often need nearly as much attention after a win as they do after a defeat) but the buzz makes it all worthwhile.

The social side was very much appreciated as well, something most other events have yet to recognise.

For those not there, my recollection of the winners are :-
Sat am - STINGER
Sat pm - TORNADO
Sun am - BIGGER BROTHER
Sun pm - TORNADO

I can also assure you it was full blown war. There was little evidence of sympathy 'coz in several battles the slightest weakness was crucified by the opposition resulting in some major surgery and even re-incarnation (obviously a good choice of date).

The whole weekend was a fabulous illustration of the skill and dedication within our ranks. Well done to Everybody involved.

Kev.

Another great event! Many thanks to Eddy, Roy and all those involved in putting on the event. The Savage Toaster's shell and chassis were on static display throughout the weekend- reaction by members of the audience to the design was really positive- lots of photos taken, and the commentator was able to use the chassis (with wheels, motors and rams attached) to illustrate some basic elements of construction in-between bouts.
The Ant was thrown together on Sunday and finally ran in the last melee, very poorly I might add, but at least Team Toaster has finally competed in some form... Thanks to Jon Howdle for his kind comments on the build quality, and for all the glue, but it's performance that counts and it's gonna need some serious development to stand a chance next time! Still, at least it's good'n'light...
Lots of excellent fights over the weekend, with many teams showing evolutionary improvements in both driving and design, particularly Bigger Brother and Tornado. Plenty of socialising and silliness too. As usual the Plunderbird guys were on good form. Better yet Jon Witte bought me a Guiness! Whatta guy... Oh, and I proposed to my partner of 20-odd years as well! Ah, the romance of robot events..! (?!) Showing a remarkable and uncharacteristic lack of jugdement she accepted, so we'll be wed next year. I've already suggested we tie the knot at next year's event, but she seemed oddly reluctant. Ach, I'll talk her 'round...

Robot Wars Discussion Forum: General: What is Tornado's new weapon?

Michael Griffiths (Savage)

Wednesday, April 25, 2001 - 05:05 pm
Having heard of the powerful one's recent success, I was wondering what was now in place of the pneumatic spike.
Also, what improvements are some of the other veterans getting (e.g. Bigger Brother)?

Kruel Intent (Kruelintent)

Thursday, May 03, 2001 - 07:05 pm
Bigger bro's flipper was mighty impressive at Debenham.

I wouldn't call Tornado's 'new weapon' a new weapon. It just makes things easier for them. No more details as I dont know if Mr Marchant wants people to know yet.

The scoup/blade thing we were sporting at Debenham is just a charity event weapon. We're working on something much more devestating...

I have been lucky enough to see Tornado's new weapon - no I'm not going to tell anyone what it is, I have been sworn to secrecy however lets just say it's going to make a lethal robot even more devastating.

Time to go buy more armour :o(

Apology accepted. Sensible post, Garry.

Hey, let's start a discussino about Robot Wars to ease the tension in here shall we? There are enough threads about who we all think is going to win S5, but who do we all want to win??

C'mon, it's an attempt to get the forum back to what it should be.

Garry Brown (Majson)

ornado have beaten chaos 2 more times than chaos them. I think its something like 4-2 to tornado and stinger has also beten chaos 2 a few times.

Good. It will be in the Northern Anhiliallator, of course. :)

Chaos 2 in my opinion did not deserve to beat Tornado or Stinger.

Guy, I seem to remember Chaos 2 winning that fight?
Adam, why did Chaos 2 not deserve to beat Tornado?

The Chaos2 v Tornado fight was restarted twice because of problems with the robots.......

The worst case of TV editing I've heard of was the Chaos2 vs Tornado match. I thought Tornado would do well against Chaos2, and was very disappointed when Chaos2 confidently evicted them from the arena. I later learnt that there were in fact three (count 'em) battles before the winner was decided, and in one of them, Tornado very nearly won, and would have if their drive chain hadn't fallen off.

OK

Tournament organisation

[This post has been edited, it was rather long and there's only one bit that's relevant!]

An example of this attitude difference is the number of fights they get through in one day and also the possibility of re-shoots... Did I read that Choas 2 v Tornado was reshot *three* times last year???

Fight 1 - Chaos 2 and Tornado drive round for a bit, then Chaos 2 rips up part of the floor which was sticking out. Cease is called immediately and both teams agree to restart the fight.
Fight 2 - Chaos 2 flips Tornado a couple of times, but then Tornado comes back and pushes Chaos 2 into Shunts CPZ. George could not see into this corner of the arena from where he was standing, so Chaos 2 just sits there as Shunt knocks out the drive chain. Unfortunately for Tornado, the bane of its entire series came back to haunt them again: the drive chain slipped for the fourth time in a row, and with both robots immobilised, a rematch is ordered.
Fight 3 - Chaos 2 flips Tornado around and yes, you've guessed it, the drive chain falls off again. Chaos 2 flips Tornado towards the side, then against the arena wall, then finally crashing down onto one of the remote-controlled cameras outside the ring, much to Mentorn's chagrin. Chaos 2 go through!

The pinball is very unfair. But let's look at it another way. How well would Gemini have done in Sumo?

Anyway. If having two robots in the arena's SO unfair, then how did Tornado win? I mean, let's face it... Tornado's basically a battering ram on wheels. It shouldn't have stood a chance, right?
Well um... How did they win? Was it a freak accident? No. Was it bad driving by Gemini? No. Was it good driving and tactics by Tornado? My word, I do beleive it was!

disagreement here, thay may be legal but fair?

Frank (Pcbore)

Yes, they are fair! Tornado proved them to be so in a rather violent manner! They also lost to Diotoir in the celebraty special, and it was thier regular drivers driving.

Robot Wars Discussion Forum: General: Can anyone beat Chaos 2?????

Dundindan (Dundindan)

Monday, July 23, 2001 - 12:04 pm
Mortis could give it a good fight.
Razer has already beaten it.
Panic Attack is a possibility.
Tornado(with their new weapon).
Anthrax looks good, as does Executioner.

Theres a lot of robots who could beat Chaos2, the thing is though they dont. Thats why Chaos2 has won two wars on te trot.

Mike Lambert Dantomkia (Grafix)

Monday, July 23, 2001 - 12:13 pm
so far, Dominator II, Bigger Brother, Tornado and a few others ( can't remember them all ) have beat Chaos II. George is a good driver and Chaos is a very good bot. But there are other good drivers and bots out there. As to an axe hitting chaos, Dominator II placed their axe through the polycarb and bottle at Debenhams this year. Buy the video. Well worth the dosh.

Mike.

I reckon Chaos2 will still do reasnobly well this year, no matter what anyone says, it still is one of the best robots around.

I think that Tornado will have a good year this year, them and Razer. I'd also like to see Mortis do really well, i could see them three getting to the semis if none of them break down, along with either Pussycat or Chaos2, not to sure.

Whos your bet on to win it this year anyway?

Richard Southworth (Velociraptor)

Monday, July 23, 2001 - 03:41 pm
My bet is on Razer, or maybe Tornado. Hopefully Razer has had all the problems it can have, and won't break down this time.

FrankMOP (Pcbore)

Monday, July 23, 2001 - 07:39 pm
If there's any justice, Razer will do well, but I think the likes of Tornado and Pussycat will be the ones to watch. Maybe Bigger Brother will do well as well. Other possibilities are Hypnodisc(of course), the new Suicidal Tendencies looks LETHAL, and Stinger as an outside insider. Chaos2 should reach the semi's. Maybe the final. Again, if there's any justice, they'll be ebaten t the very last hurdle.

Garry Brown FD (Majson)
